Ingredients
-
1 (30 oz) bag frozen hash browns, thawed
-
1/2 cup (120g) unsalted butter, melted
-
1/2 cup (120ml) milk
-
12 large eggs
-
2 cups (200g) shredded cheddar cheese (or your favorite cheese)
-
1/2 teaspoon salt
-
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
-
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
-
1/4 teaspoon onion powder (optional)
-
1/2 cup (80g) cooked and crumbled breakfast sausage (optional)
-
1/4 cup (30g) diced green onions or bell peppers (optional)
Instructions
-
Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray or butter.
-
Prepare the Hash Browns: In a large bowl, combine the thawed hash browns with the melted butter, salt, and pepper. Spread this mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish, pressing it down gently to form a layer.
-
Prepare the Egg Mixture: In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk until well combined. Add in the shredded cheese, garlic powder, and onion powder, and stir until evenly distributed. If you’re using sausage or vegetables, mix them into the egg mixture.
-
Pour Over Hash Browns: Pour the egg mixture evenly over the hash brown layer in the baking dish.
-
Bake the Casserole: Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the eggs are set and the top is lightly golden. You can test the eggs by inserting a toothpick or knife into the center—if it comes out clean, the casserole is done.
-
Cool and Serve: Allow the casserole to cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
-
Make-Ahead: This casserole can be prepared the night before. Simply assemble the dish, cover it with plastic wrap, and refrigerate overnight. When ready to bake, remove it from the fridge and bake as directed.
-
Customization: Feel free to add cooked bacon, ham, or spinach to the egg mixture for extra flavor.
-
For Crispy Hash Browns: To make sure the hash browns get crispy, press them down firmly before baking and don’t skip the butter!
-
Freezing: This casserole freezes well! After baking and cooling, wrap individual servings in plastic wrap and aluminum foil, then freeze. Reheat in the microwave or oven.
