Ingredients

  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 3 tablespoons softened butter

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves.
  • Sprinkle the yeast over the warm water mixture and let it sit for 5-10 minutes, or until it becomes frothy.
  • Add the flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Mix until the dough starts to come together.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
  • Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Shape it into a loaf and place it in a greased loaf pan.
  • Let the dough rise again for about 30 minutes, or until it has risen slightly above the edge of the pan.
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Bake the bread for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown on top and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  • Remove from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

  • For a softer crust, brush the top of the loaf with butter immediately after baking.
  • You can also add herbs or garlic for a flavor twist.
  • If you don’t have a loaf pan, you can shape the dough into a round loaf and bake it on a baking sheet.
