Description

Greek Honey Cake, also known as “Melomakarona,” is a traditional Greek dessert soaked in honey syrup, topped with walnuts, and flavored with warm spices like cinnamon and cloves. It’s a festive and aromatic treat that brings the authentic taste of Greece to your kitchen. Perfect for any celebration, this cake is moist, flavorful, and a wonderful way to experience Greek culture through food.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup ground walnuts

  • 1/2 cup olive oil

  • Zest of 1 orange

  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

  • 1/2 tsp ground cloves

  • 1 tsp baking soda

  • 1/2 cup orange juice

  • 1/4 cup honey

  • 1/4 cup water

  • 1/2 cup sugar

  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (for garnish)

Instructions

  • Preheat the Oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking dish or line it with parchment paper.

  • Prepare the Cake Batter: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, ground walnuts, cinnamon, cloves, and baking soda. In another bowl, whisk together the olive oil, orange juice, and zest. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until well incorporated.

  • Shape the Cake: Scoop out the dough and shape it into small oval or round balls. Place them on the prepared baking sheet, ensuring they are evenly spaced.

  • Bake the Cake: Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

  • Prepare the Honey Syrup: While the cake bakes, combine honey, water, and sugar in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves, then simmer for 5 minutes.

  • Soak the Cake: After baking, immediately dip the warm cakes into the honey syrup for a few seconds, then place them on a serving platter.

  • Garnish and Serve: Top with chopped walnuts and let the cakes cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • To prevent the cakes from drying out, avoid overbaking them.

  • Let the syrup cool slightly before soaking the cakes for optimal texture.

  • For best results, use fresh orange zest.

  • This cake can be served at room temperature for the best flavor.
