  • 1 cup granulated sugar (for caramelizing)

  • 4 large eggs

  • 2 cups whole milk

  • 1 cup sweetened condensed milk (for extra creaminess)

  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract (for that lovely aromatic flavor)

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (to balance the sweetness)


Instructions

  • Caramelize the sugar: In a medium pan over medium heat, melt the granulated sugar until it turns into a golden caramel. Pour the caramel into muffin tin cups and let it cool slightly.

  • Prepare the custard: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, sweetened condensed milk, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth and well combined.

  • Pour the custard over the caramel: Carefully pour the custard mixture into the muffin cups, over the caramel.

  • Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the muffin tin into a water bath and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

 

  • Cool and serve: Allow the muffins to cool completely before gently running a knife around the edges to release them. Serve chilled.

Notes

You can also use a flan mold instead of muffin tins for a more traditional flan presentation.

For extra flavor, try adding a bit of cinnamon or nutmeg to the custard mixture.
