Description

This Balsamic Grilled Flank Steak Caprese combines tender, juicy grilled flank steak with fresh, creamy mozzarella, vibrant tomatoes, and aromatic basil, all drizzled with a tangy balsamic glaze. It’s a refreshing, flavorful dish perfect for summer grilling, special occasions, or a quick weeknight dinner. The balsamic marinade gives the steak a rich, savory flavor that pairs perfectly with the classic Caprese toppings.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Flank Steak Marinade:

  • 1 lb flank steak
  • ¼ cup balsamic vinegar
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup (optional, for sweetness)

For the Caprese Topping:

  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 8 oz fresh mozzarella, sliced or torn into pieces
  • ¼ cup fresh basil leaves, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons balsamic glaze (for drizzling)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  • In a bowl, whisk together the balsamic vinegar, olive oil, garlic, oregano, salt, pepper, and honey (if using) to make the marinade.
  • Place the flank steak in a shallow dish or resealable plastic bag, and pour the marinade over the steak. Seal and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to 2 hours, or overnight for more flavor.
  • Preheat your grill or grill pan to medium-high heat. Remove the steak from the marinade and let it come to room temperature. Discard the marinade.
  • Grill the flank steak for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until it reaches your desired level of doneness (for medium-rare, aim for 130°F internal temperature).
  • Remove the steak from the grill and let it rest for 5 minutes before slicing thinly against the grain.
  • While the steak rests, prepare the Caprese topping: in a small bowl, combine the halved cherry tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, and chopped basil. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Arrange the sliced flank steak on a platter or individual plates, and top with the Caprese mixture.
  • Drizzle the balsamic glaze over the top for a burst of sweetness and tang. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • To make the dish even easier, you can use pre-sliced mozzarella and store-bought balsamic glaze.
  • If you prefer, you can also roast the tomatoes for extra sweetness.
  • This dish can be served with a side of grilled vegetables or a simple green salad.
