They’re easy to make and sure to impress anyone with their delightful taste and festive look.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Cookies:

  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp milk (optional, for smoother dough)

For the Filling:

  • ½ cup raspberry jam (or strawberry, cherry, or any preferred fruit jam)

For Garnish (optional):

  • Powdered sugar (for dusting)
  • Melted chocolate (for drizzling, optional)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Dough:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
    • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
    • In a separate large bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together until creamy and smooth, about 2-3 minutes.
    • Add the egg and vanilla extract to the butter mixture and beat until well combined. If the dough feels too dry, add a tablespoon of milk to smooth it out.
    • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a dough forms.
  • Shape the Cookies:
    • Roll the dough into tablespoon-sized balls and place them on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
    • Use your thumb (or the back of a spoon) to make an indentation in the center of each ball, shaping it into a heart shape as you press down gently. Be sure not to press too hard.
  • Fill with Jam:
    • Fill each thumbprint indentation with about 1 teaspoon of raspberry jam or your choice of fruit jam.
  • Bake the Cookies:
    • Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are slightly firm and the cookies are fully set.
    • Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Garnish (Optional):
    • Once the cookies are completely cooled, you can dust them lightly with powdered sugar for an extra touch of sweetness.
    • For added flair, drizzle melted chocolate over the cookies.
  • Serve:
    • These cookies are perfect for Valentine’s Day celebrations, gift-giving, or any special occasion!

Notes

  • If you don’t have raspberry jam, feel free to use strawberry, apricot, or even chocolate ganache for the filling.
  • To prevent the jam from spreading too much during baking, make sure the thumbprint indentations are deep enough to hold the jam.
  • You can store these cookies in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
