Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup boiling water
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch square baking pan.
- In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Stir in the milk, vegetable oil, egg, and vanilla extract until well blended.
- Carefully stir in the boiling water until the batter becomes smooth. The batter will be thin, but that’s okay.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cake to cool slightly before serving. Serve with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra treat.
Notes
- The cake has a rich, fudgy layer at the bottom which is why it’s sometimes served with a spoon. It’s a fun, interactive dessert!
- For a more indulgent treat, top the cake with chocolate chips, chocolate ganache, or whipped cream.
